Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing Program
Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing (NCCN)

Development of the cultural competence of nurses, the largest component of the healthcare workforce, is increasingly important in order to deliver effective healthcare. As such, it is important to create supportive, culturally competent work environments to improve the recruitment and retention of nurses-both those from underrepresented populations and those serving underrepresented populations.

To do this, the Oregon Center for Nursing has partnered with The Oregon Community Foundation to create the Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing (NCCN) program. This program is designed to fund projects that integrate cultural competence into the nursing workforce, and to foster collaboration between various organizations to improve cultural competence among nurses in the Pacific Northwest.

The NCCN program received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Northwest Health Foundation as part of the Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future program.  In addition to The Oregon Community Foundation, local funders include the Ann and Bill Swindells Charitable Trust, the Samuel S. Johnson Foundation, Legacy Health Systems, and Providence Health Systems Community Grants Council.

The main goal of the program is to increase awareness of the importance of cultural competence, disseminate information about cultural competence best practices to the nursing community, provide incentives to implement use of such practices, and encourage nurses in various settings to learn from each other.

The NCCN program is the result of a collaborative effort among the following groups:
•    The Oregon Center for Nursing (OCN);
•    The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF); and
•    The Nursing Workforce Diversity Taskforce (NWD). Members of this group include representatives of several schools of nursing and health care agencies in Oregon and SW Washington.
