Developing cultural competence in nurses, the largest component of the healthcare workforce, is increasingly important to deliver effective healthcare to a more diverse population. In addition, it is important to create supportive, culturally competent work environments to improve the recruitment and retention of nurses – both those from underrepresented populations and those serving underrepresented populations. However, despite the well documented need for culturally competent nurses, there is a need to identify some best practices for implementing cultural training programs at nursing schools, healthcare centers and hospitals.
To find some of these “promising practices,” the Oregon Center for Nursing partnered with The Oregon Community Foundation to create the Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing (NCCN) program. This two year program is designed to fund projects that integrate cultural competence into the nursing workforce, and to foster collaboration between various organizations to create a group of cultural competence nursing experts in the Pacific Northwest.
The main goals of the NCCN program are to increase awareness of the importance of cultural competence, disseminate information about cultural competence best practices to the nursing community, provide incentives to implement use of such practices, and encourage nurses in various settings to learn from each other.
The NCCN program received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Northwest Health Foundation as part of the Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future program. In addition to The Oregon Community Foundation, local funders include the Ann and Bill Swindells Charitable Trust, the Samuel S. Johnson Foundation, Legacy Health Systems, and Providence Health Systems Community Grants Council.
